Yes — the hood filter was greasy. I washed it and the fan cover. Rattle is gone and the fan actually pulls now.

Good work. Keep an eye (and ear) on the fan for a week; if noise comes back or airflow drops again, loop in the landlord for a motor or unit replacement.
If odors persist only when cooking, run the hood on low while cooking and a few minutes after.
