Bathroom exhaust fan rattles and barely pulls air. Also the hall feels stuffy when I cook.

Two separate things sometimes: the bath fan motor or grille may be clogged, and cooking odors can linger if kitchen exhaust is weak or filters are dirty.

For the bath fan: does the rattle happen only on high speed? Any burning smell?

May 25

T

No burning smell. Rattle on both speeds. I popped the cover and the blade was caked with dust.

Cleaning the blade and housing often fixes noise and airflow. Power off at the breaker if you are not sure which switch controls the fan, then vacuum gently with a soft brush.

If it still rattles after cleaning, the motor bearing may be worn — that is a replace-the-unit job for maintenance.

For the hall stuffiness: do you have a range hood with a metal grease filter?

T

Yes — the hood filter was greasy. I washed it and the fan cover. Rattle is gone and the fan actually pulls now.

Good work. Keep an eye (and ear) on the fan for a week; if noise comes back or airflow drops again, loop in the landlord for a motor or unit replacement.

If odors persist only when cooking, run the hood on low while cooking and a few minutes after.

All good now — marking this resolved. Thanks.
